Bill writes:

I arrived back in Conway late on Friday night. It took me about an hour to find a hotel that had rooms available and the place I found was less than stellar, but at least it had indoor plumbing.

The group called from Bangor on Saturday morning and we arranged to meet for lunch in North Conway. They had at least a 3.5 hour drive from Bangor so I had time to do a little sightseeing. The old place I found along Rte 302 looked like it had plenty of stories to tell.

When the group left Bangor, Matt took off on his own, headed for Pittsburgh, PA. It's Saturday in north country so the roads were jammed with tourists. It took the group about 4 hours to get to Conway.

Our destination today is White River Junction, VT. with dinner in Hanover NH at Dartmouth. But before we get there we get to ride the Kankamungus highway (NH Route 112) This road runs through the White Mountain National Forest. It's a great bike road, as evidenced by the elebenty-seven bikes we encountered along the way. The scenery is great and the turns and curves even better. About a third of the way across we decided to split up to allow everyone to ride the Kank in a manner of their choosing. We would meet up again at the end where 112 joins Rte 10.

We met up in the driveway of this campground that just so happened to be holding a luau that afternoon. We helped with the festivities by handing out kazoos to everyone. As we drove off the sound of kazoos, off tune and humming a number of different songs wafted on the breeze.

Moe, by the way, dropped his bike. Not along the Kankamungus on a twisting road and not in an attempt to miss some local fauna crossing the road, but after he had stopped in the driveway of the campground. As it was happening I was torn between the desire to go and help him or run and get the camera. Sorry folks, but helping him won out. No pictures.

A sort of quick run through the countryside down Rt 10 brought us to Hanover, NH and Dartmouth College. Carla Richter, head of the costume shop at Dartmouth and long time friend, along with a number of Dartmouth faculty, staff and students, put together a great dinner for us. It was at this cabin down by the Connecticut River. The weather and the setting were perfect. And so was dinner. The grilled portabella mushrooms were amazing.

After dinner it was off to White River Junction and the hotel. There had been a Shriners Parade in Hanover that day and many of the Shriners were staying at the hotel. We sat and talked with them for a while and, of course gave out kazoos. As I headed upstairs to my room I was accompanied by the strains of America the Beautiful.

And so ends our next to the last day. My thanks to Carla and everyone that came out to meet us.
